Frequently Asked Questions
What is TruMile?
TruMile is an IRS-compliant mileage tracker for iPhone. It automatically detects and records your trips using GPS, classifies them as business, personal, medical, or charitable, and calculates your tax deductions using the current IRS standard mileage rate.
How does automatic trip detection work?
When you grant background location and motion permissions, TruMile uses your device's GPS and motion sensors to detect when you start driving. Trips are recorded automatically and you can classify them later with a swipe — right for business, left for personal.
What does TruMile Premium include?
The free tier includes up to 25 trips per month, manual trip entry, and all calculators. TruMile Premium unlocks:
- Unlimited trip tracking
- Multiple vehicles
- PDF mileage reports
- Expense tracking
- Bluetooth vehicle detection
- iCloud sync across devices
Premium is available as a yearly subscription ($59.99/year), monthly subscription ($7.99/month), or a one-time lifetime purchase ($149.99). All plans include a 7-day free trial.
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
Open TruMile, go to your account settings, and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase. If the restore doesn't work, try signing out and back in to the App Store, then tap Restore Purchases again.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through Apple. To cancel:
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Select TruMile Premium
- Tap Cancel Subscription
Your Premium features will remain active until the end of the current billing period.
How do I request a refund?
All purchases are processed by Apple. To request a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID.
Is my data private?
Yes. All trip data, locations, and vehicle information are stored locally on your device. If you enable iCloud sync, your data is stored in your private iCloud account — never on our servers. We do not sell or share your personal data. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Are the mileage calculations IRS-compliant?
TruMile uses the current IRS standard mileage rate ($0.70/mile for 2025) and calculates distances by summing GPS segments rather than straight-line distance. However, TruMile is a tracking tool, not tax advice. Always consult a qualified tax professional for your specific situation.
Does TruMile work on iPad?
TruMile is designed for iPhone running iOS 17 or later.
Troubleshooting
Trips aren't being detected automatically
Make sure you've granted TruMile "Always" location permission and motion permissions:
- Open Settings > TruMile > Location
- Select Always
- Enable Motion & Fitness
Also check that automatic tracking is enabled in the app's settings.
The app is crashing or not responding
Try force-quitting and reopening the app. If the issue persists, make sure you're running the latest version from the App Store. You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling — your purchases can be restored via Restore Purchases.
My purchase isn't showing up
Go to your account settings in the app and tap Restore Purchases. If you're still having trouble, make sure you're signed in with the correct Apple ID and check your internet connection.
Battery usage seems high
TruMile uses a battery-efficient approach: low-power significant location changes when idle, and continuous GPS only during active trip recording. If battery drain is a concern, you can disable automatic trip detection in settings and log trips manually.
